RLSS National Water Safety Management Programme 2.0

Challenge

This RLSS Certificated Award is predominantly aimed at those working in, or close to, water in outdoor environments and is particularly suitable for Outdoor Instructors and Assistants.

There are two levels to the new NWSMP 2.0 award:

Water Safety Awareness Module
For those working or supervising near water who do not have a definite intention to get into the water, for example, a School Teacher taking a group on a field trip. Includes:
  • Generic Open Water Hazards 
  • Risk Management 
  • Land-based Rescue Techniques  
  • PPE & Aquatic Clothing 
  • Basic Life Support Awareness

For those with clients/people under their supervision who plan to enter the water or might be swimming out of their depth, for example, an Outdoor Instructor leading a deep water activity session, such as Gorge Walking, Coasteering, Rafting, etc. There are two Modules that can be undertaken:

Inland Waterways Module 
This module focuses on specific inland waterway hazards along with in-water skills for both still and moving water. 
  • Inland-Specific Hazards 
  • In Water Rescue Skills 
  • Personal Safety 
  • Dynamic Risk Management
  • Moving in Shallow Water 

Coastal Waterways Module 
This module focuses on specific coastal waterway hazards along with in-water skills. 
  • Coastal-specific Hazards 
  • In Water Rescue Skills 
  • Personal Safety 
  • Dynamic Risk Management 
  • Returning to Shore Through Surf 
  • Coastal Wildlife 

Training and Assessment includes comprehensive Learning Guides. The duration of the course will depend on modules taken but a typical programme, covering Water Safety awareness and Inland and Coastal modules requires 2 days of training.

Endorsed by the Health and Safety Executive for its sensible, proportionate, reasonable and balanced advice to both those responsible for groups around the water margin or workers operating in, on or near water and in particular managing the risk from operating around the water margin. The NWSMP awards are the most pragmatic solution for outdoor professionals working in coastal, river and waters edge environment. It will complement your existing qualifications and will give you concrete evidence of your competencies to manage groups in and around water.
